A COMPANY HISTORY - By Alyn Horton

Once upon a time there was a young woman named Debbie who lived in a little flower trimmed house near the river in London.  Every day, she went to work meeting the rich and famous and making them look even more beautiful with her magical box of make-up.  Her work took her far and wide all over the world, and while on her travels, she found herself drawn to the most exquisite fabrics and trimmings of all colours and descriptions; jewel-toned silks from the Far East, sparkling crystal trims from Russia and many more.

One day, Debbie's best friend had a beautiful baby girl, and when she grew old enough, Debbie took her treasure trove of materials and set to make the most beautiful, colourful dress for her new god-daughter.  Mixing and matching, she wove her unique magic into the dress and sewed all through the night.  The next morning, the dress was finished.  It had a bodice of sapphire silk from China, the colour of the ocean at midnight, shimmering with woven gold cherry blossoms and platinum coiled dragons.

The rest of the dress was made from an antique remnant of cosy flannelette found in an old wooden trunk locked away long ago in a dusty attic; feather soft and ice blue, it was showered with printed tiny roses, floral sprigs and miniature leaves in a bouquet of dusky and raspberry pink, forest green and palma violet.  The dress was edged with sugar pink fringing glittering with woven silver thread and finished with pink satin ribbon edging the cuffs and neck.  On taking the dress out of it`s box, the room was filled with the smell of lavender - the god-daughter couldn`t believe her eyes and it instantly became her favourite outfit.
