Marcus Bankes is a consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, and trained at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, with subspecialty training in Boston, Toronto and Vancouver. His practice is exclusively adult hip surgery for all ages with specialist skills in:
- hip replacements for younger patients (ceramic on ceramic bearings)
- small incision total hip replacement
- hip resurfacing
- revision hip replacement
- hip arthroscopy and sporting hip injuries
- hip dysplasia (shallow hip sockets) and peri-acetabular osteotomy
- femoroacetabular impingement
- avascular necrosis
- disorders of muscles, tendons and nerves of the hip
Mr Bankes avoids the use of blood products in hip surgery and routinely uses a cell saver so that blood lost during the operation may be returned to the patient during or after the operation. This reduces transfusion of other people's blood and makes surgery safer and more acceptable for Jehovah's Witnesses.
