Lady in her late 50s underwent successful uncemented ceramic on ceramic THR on both hips using a mini-posterior approach on each side.

Small incision THR is a technique developed over the last 5 years in the US that involves placing a standard cemented or uncemented total hip replacement through a smaller incision using a posterior approach to the hip. This is possible with use of special instruments and is now Mr Bankes' standard method for uncomplicated cases. In the approach the large muscles are split and only the small external rotator muscles are divided; these are firmly repaired at the end of the procedure. The advantages claimed are:

  • Shorter hospital stay and faster rehabilitation
  • Decreased pain
  • Greater patient satisfaction
  • Improved cosmetic appearance
  • Use of standard implants with an established track record
